About the Workshop:

SYNERGY.io Club – SCET hosted an insightful workshop titled "Designing Smarter with "Canva"" as part of the First Year Induction Program for Mechanical Engineering students. This beginner-friendly session introduced students to Canva, a modern graphic design platform, showcasing its versatility and advantages over traditional tools like PowerPoint.

Objective

The workshop aimed to equip new engineering students with essential design skills using Canva, empowering them to create compelling presentations, posters, and visual content with ease. By introducing a powerful yet intuitive platform, the session encouraged students to embrace modern digital tools for academic and professional use.

Session Highlights

• Introduction to Visual Design: A primer on why visual communication matters in engineering, academia, and beyond.
• Canva vs. Traditional Tools: A side-by-side comparison of Canva and PowerPoint, highlighting the flexibility, aesthetics, and user-friendliness of Canva.
• Live Walkthrough: Real-time demonstration of creating a presentation from scratch using Canva’s templates, elements, and animations.
• Interactive Exercises: Students followed along on their own devices, creating mini-projects and experimenting with layouts, typography, and color palettes.

Event Flow

The session began with an opening note from Archan Sharma and Vedant Acharya, Presidents of SYNERGY.io Club – SCET, who welcomed the new batch and introduced the club’s mission of technological empowerment through hands-on learning.

This was followed by a structured walkthrough of the Canva platform—tailored specifically for engineering students with minimal design experience. The emphasis was on usability, quick learning, and practical applications such as class presentations, project posters, and club promotions.

The session progressed into a guided hands-on activity where students were challenged to design a creative introductory slide about themselves using Canva. This helped them immediately apply the skills they had just learned.

Creative Challenge

To drive engagement and creativity, a short Design Challenge was conducted. Students had 60 minutes to create a visually appealing poster and presentation. The goal was to implement design principles such as balance, hierarchy, and contrast.

Feedback & Impact

Feedback collected post-session reflected strong enthusiasm and appreciation. Many students noted how the workshop shifted their perception of digital design and expressed excitement to use Canva in future projects. Faculty members commended the initiative for blending creativity with technical learning.
